About organise
Merging, splitting and compressing are the three things people need from a PDF far more often than editing its contents. Merging puts several documents into one file in the order you choose. Splitting pulls out the pages you need — a single signed page from a twenty-page contract, say — without sending the rest.
Compression behaves differently depending on what the PDF actually contains, and this surprises people. A document produced from Word holds text as text, which is already compact, so there is little to gain. A PDF made by scanning paper is a stack of photographs, and that is where compression makes a document ten times smaller.
If a file is too large to email after compressing, splitting is usually the better answer than compressing harder. Past a point, more compression makes a scanned page progressively harder to read while saving very little.
Organise — frequently asked questions
Because it was mostly text. Text in a PDF is stored as characters and font instructions, which are already small. The large PDFs are the ones containing scanned pages or high-resolution photographs, and those compress dramatically.
