How does it know where the columns are?

By looking for vertical channels of whitespace that run down the whole block of text. In a printed table those gaps line up between every row, which makes them a reliable signal — and it's why a photo taken straight-on works far better than one at an angle.

Why are some cells shaded amber?

Those are cells where the recognition confidence was below 70%. It's usually a blurry area, a faint print, or an unusual character. Check them against the image before exporting — they're the ones most likely to be wrong.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Recognition runs in your browser, which matters here because tables are usually invoices, bank statements and payroll. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

The result is messy — what can I improve?

Crop tightly to the table, photograph it straight-on rather than at an angle, and make sure the whole width is in frame and in focus. A screenshot always beats a photo. If the source is a PDF rather than an image, use the PDF to Excel tool instead — it reads the text directly and is far more accurate.

No, and it says so rather than pretending otherwise. The engine is trained on printed text, and no free browser-based engine reads messy handwriting reliably. For a handwritten ledger a wrong digit is worse than no result at all, so this tool sticks to printed tables.
