Character Counter

Count characters and instantly see whether the text fits where you need it. As well as the raw counts, you get live headroom against the limits that actually matter — a 60-character SEO title, a 160-character meta description, a 160-character SMS, and a 280-character post. The UTF-8 byte count is shown too, because an emoji costs four bytes, not one.

Why use this tool

  • Characters with and without spaces, plus words and UTF-8 bytes
  • Live headroom against SEO title, meta description, SMS and X limits
  • Shows how far over the limit you are, not just that you are over
  • Runs in your browser — nothing is uploaded

How it works

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box above.
  2. 2Watch the character count and the limit checks update as you type.
  3. 3Trim until the limit you care about shows characters left rather than over.

Character Counter — frequently asked questions

Accented letters take two bytes in UTF-8 and most emoji take four. If a system limits you by bytes rather than characters — many databases and SMS gateways do — the byte count is the number that matters.
