VAT Calculator
Add VAT to a net figure or strip it back out of a gross one. Removing VAT is where most people go wrong: taking 20% off a VAT-inclusive price gives the wrong answer, because the VAT was 20% of the smaller net figure, not of the total. This divides by 1.20 instead, and shows the net, the VAT and the gross side by side so the numbers are checkable.
UK standard is 20%, reduced 5%. Ireland 23%, Germany 19%, France 20%.

VAT Calculator — frequently asked questions
Divide by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. At 20%, divide the gross by 1.2. Subtracting 20% from the gross is the common mistake and leaves you short — on £120 it gives £96 instead of the correct £100.
