About convert
Each image format is good at something different, and converting is how you pick the right one for where the image is going. JPG is built for photographs and has no transparency. PNG keeps transparency and every pixel exactly as it was, which makes it right for logos, screenshots and anything with text, and larger for photographs. WebP does both jobs at smaller sizes and is supported everywhere that matters now.
SVG is not a picture of pixels at all — it is a set of drawing instructions, so it stays sharp at any size. That makes it ideal for logos and icons and useless for photographs. ICO and favicon files are the small, multi-size formats a browser tab expects, which is why they get their own tools rather than being a resize step.
Base64 is the odd one out: it turns an image into a block of text you can paste directly into HTML or CSS, avoiding a separate network request. It costs about a third more bytes than the file it encodes, so it pays for small icons and works against you for anything large.
Convert — frequently asked questions
Photographs: JPG, or WebP if you want the same quality smaller. Anything with text, sharp edges, flat colour or transparency — logos, screenshots, diagrams: PNG. Saving a screenshot as JPG is the most common version of this mistake, and it shows as fuzzy halos around the letters.
