About watermark
A watermark marks an image as yours and makes casual reuse obviously improper. It does not prevent copying — anything visible on a screen can be captured — so the goal is deterrence and attribution rather than protection.
Placement decides whether it works. A small mark in a corner is easily cropped away; one that crosses the centre of the subject survives cropping but competes with the image itself. Most people settle on a semi-transparent mark large enough to span the middle, faint enough to read past.
Keep an unwatermarked master of every image. The watermark cannot be removed cleanly afterwards, and the day a client or publication asks for a clean copy is the day you discover whether you kept one.
Watermark — frequently asked questions
No, and nothing does. It makes theft obvious to anyone who sees the result, and makes the image less attractive to take in the first place. That is the whole benefit, and it is a real one.
