Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not directly — Google has been explicit that description text is not a ranking factor. It affects how many people click the result, which is the reason to write a good one. Google also rewrites descriptions roughly half the time when it thinks a passage from the page answers the query better.

What does the canonical link do?

It tells search engines which URL is the real address for this content, so pages reachable at several URLs — with tracking parameters, with and without a trailing slash — are treated as one page rather than competing duplicates. Point it at the version you want indexed, using the full absolute URL.

What's the difference between noindex and disallow?

Noindex, set here, tells a crawler that has read the page not to list it. Disallow, set in robots.txt, tells it not to fetch the page at all — which means it never sees the noindex. If you need a page out of search results, allow the crawl and use noindex; blocking it in robots.txt can leave an already-indexed page listed with no description.

Are meta keywords still worth adding?

No. Google stopped using the keywords meta tag in 2009 after it was abused into meaninglessness, and no major engine uses it today. It is left out of the output here deliberately.

Aim for 30–60 characters. Google measures pixel width rather than characters, so a title full of wide letters can be cut shorter than one of the same length in narrow ones — 60 is the safe approximation. Under 30 usually means you are leaving useful, relevant words unused.
