Profit Margin Calculator

Enter what something costs you and what you sell it for, and get the profit, the margin and the markup. Margin and markup are the most commonly confused pair of numbers in small business: margin is profit over the selling price, markup is profit over the cost. A 50% markup is only a 33.3% margin, and pricing as though they're the same is how businesses quietly undercharge.

Profit Margin Calculator — frequently asked questions

Margin is profit divided by the selling price; markup is profit divided by the cost. On an item costing £60 sold at £100, the profit is £40 — that's a 40% margin but a 66.7% markup. Same money, very different percentage.
