Plain Text QR Codes: The Simplest Type, and When to Use It

Every other QR type points somewhere online. Plain text is the one type that needs nothing hosted at all — the answer is inside the code itself.

What makes this type different from every other one

A website, PDF, or social profile QR code all encode a link — the actual content lives somewhere else, and the code just points at it. A plain text QR code has no destination at all: the words themselves are stored directly inside the pattern, so scanning it displays the text immediately, with nothing to load and nothing that can go offline later.

The more characters you encode, the denser and larger the resulting QR pattern gets, which makes it harder to scan reliably at small print sizes. Plain text works best for short content — a code, a short note, a set of instructions — rather than long-form writing. For anything lengthy, host it somewhere and use the Website or PDF type instead, which keeps the QR code itself simple regardless of how much content sits behind the link.

Good uses for this type

Wi-Fi passwords or access codes displayed as readable text rather than the dedicated Wi-Fi type, when you want the code itself to also be human-readable as a fallback. Serial numbers, batch codes, or asset tags for inventory that needs to scan into readable text rather than a database lookup. Short instructions or safety notices on equipment where hosting a webpage would be overkill.

Generate a plain text QR code

Type your text above and generate instantly — there's no hosting step and nothing that can break later, since the content lives entirely inside the code.
